Skinner Auction of Fine Wines September 19, 2008

Almost a year to the day following the successful inaugural sale of Fine Wines, Skinner, one of the nation's leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, will host its third auction of Fine Wines on September 19, 2008 in its Boston gallery. In partnership with Lower Falls Wine Company, Skinner’s sale will offer nearly 300 lots of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and Port.

Skinner is the only major auction house in New England to offer fine wines at auction, and, as such, can do so tax-free unlike the competition in New York. Highlights of this sale include several wines from 1982 and 1989 – two years that boasted excellent vintages. On the block from the earlier year of the two are 12 bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982 (lot 89, est. $20/30,000); 12 bottles of Chateau Margaux 1982 (lot 90, est. $9/12,000); 12 bottles of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 (lot 91, est. $11/16,000); and a double magnum of Chateau Latour 1982 (lot 44, est. $6,5/9,500). Representative of 1989 comes two lots of 12 bottles of Chateau Margaux 1989 (lots 97 and 98, est. $5/7,000 each); ten bottles of Chateau Haut Brion 1989 (lot 2, est. $11/16,000); and 12 bottles of Chateau Petrus 1989 (lot 100, est. $35/50,000).

Other featured offerings include one bottle of Chateau d’Yquem 1928 (lot 241, est. $1,8/2,400); one bottle of Chateau Petrus 1961 (lot 136, est. $3/5,000); 12 bottles of Chateau Latour 2000 (lot 38, est. $11/17,000); two bottles of Chateau Margaux 1929 (lot 223, est. $1,2/1,800); four magnums of Chateau Lynch Bages 1985 (lot 51, est. $2,5/3,500); and two bottles of Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Grands Echezeaux 1966 (lot 107, est. $2/3,000). For those that appreciate California Cabernets, two bottles of Screaming Eagle 2005 (lot 105, est. $2,5/3,500) will be available for bid.

For Champagne aficionados, featured is Cristal Brut 1990, being offered in three lots: two lots of 12 bottles (lots 147 and 147A, est. $6/9,000 each) and one lot of three bottles (lot 147B, est. $1,5/2,200).

Finally, rounding out the sale is a number of wine-related articles such as coasters, decanters and sterling silver wine labels.

I went to the last Skinner wine auction and it was a lot of fun. I did bid on a few items though they end up selling for more than I was willing to pay. Overall though, there were some good deals to be had at the auction, provided you had the money to take advantage of them. If you really want to buy some high end wines, this is certainly a good route to do so. I will likely attend this auction too.
