New Massachusetts Alcohol Sales Tax is Coming

Effective August 1, 2009 a Massachusetts sales tax will apply to all beer, wine, and alcohol sold in stores. This is a new tax! Not only is your general sales tax rising from 5% to 6.25%, but now there is a new sales tax on beer, wine, and alcohol at 6.25% (up from 0%).

Some might say that beer, wine, and liquor should be taxed. However, what you may not know is that alcohol is already taxed in Massachusetts. There is a built in excise tax that was already paid for by the wholesaler (and passed on to you) before your local retailer received your favorite bottle of wine. Even your favorite wine reviewer has to pay excise tax on wine samples he receives. The excise rates are as follows: beer $.11 per gallon, wine $.55 per gallon, Champagne $.70 per gallon, and liquor $4.05 per gallon.

Like it or not, the new higher taxes are coming! Stock up on wine before the end of the July and save yourself some money. Many retailers are having sales this month to save you some sales tax money. Be sure to check out http://www.KensWineGuide.com/ for the latest list for Very Good Wines!
